SimplePlanes Free Download for PC Full Version
Simpleplanes is an arcade, build and fly, flight ‘simulator’ developed by Jundroo.
In SimplePlanes you design your own aircraft and then take to the sky with them! From high-speed jets to slow and steady sea planes if you can think it, you can probably make it. As you can guess from the name, the game’s selling point is that it’s pretty simple and easy to get the hang of, and it is indeed pretty simple and easy to get to grips with.
Consider this an ‘on the fence’ review rather than a straight up positive one. It took me a hell of a long time to decide whether or not I should choose positive or negative but in the end I decided to go positive since, as you’ll read towards the end of the review, it is pretty fun for a few hours but because of its issues which I’ll talk about in my review it just isn’t worth buying at full price.
Full Disclosure: A review copy was provided by the developer.
The appearance of the aircraft themselves in SimplePlanes is reasonably good, as you’d expect it’s pretty simple, nothing flashy, but they get the job done while looking reasonably good. The map on the other hand, not so great. By no means are the textures awful, painful to look at or anything else along those lines but the map has a completely different graphic style to the aircraft parts, I just thought that was a little odd. The building menus were reasonably easy to use and the UI when flying was good too, basically just the visual displays you need to be able to fly the plane.
As I mentioned, SimplePlanes is mainly a ‘build and fly’ game where you build whatever you want to with the available parts and then take it for a flight around the map. There’s not really much to say about just flying around but I will talk about the build mode itself. The build mode is effectively a more simplified version of what you’d find in Kerbal Space Program, if you’ve played that before you’ll know what you’re doing. You select a part from the list of available parts and just drag it to wherever you want to place it. Some parts will change slightly to fit with everything around them but most are just static. Once an object is placed you can edit its properties (depending on whether the part has properties to change), for example you can change how much fuel is held by a fuel tank or the size of a wing. You also have some other options like the ability to mirror your aircraft so that whatever goes on one side, goes on the other.
The game doesn’t have a huge amount of parts available for you to use but if you’re creative enough there are a lot of possibilities with the game as can be seen from some of the awesome mods that have been made. The other issue with lack of content comes from the fact that the game only has one map and that map is very small. If the game’s pricing was closer to that of the mobile version then perhaps this would be acceptable but even with the launch discount, one map just isn’t good enough, this is a real problem for the game. It is possible to make your own maps and share them (see comment section) but I’m a firm believer that just because you can get extra content elsewhere doesn’t make the base game’s lack of content acceptable.
As well as the build and fly mode, SimplePlanes does have a few scenarios for you to try out, such as scenarios where you need to make a plane to use in a machine gun only dogfight or something similar. These are pretty good, and will no doubt be enjoyed by those good enough at building planes in the game to make planes for these scenarios, but there aren’t a huge amount of them and there’s no way to make your own, again limiting how much content the game has.
With a name like SimplePlanes you’d be silly to think this is going to be an ultra-realistic flight sim but since it’s been labelled by the devs as a simulator and described as having “realistic physcis” it’s fair to expect a reasonable amount of realism. Sadly what we’ve got is a bit of a mixed bag. There’s the basic physics in place for weight distribution, thrust, lift etc. and it’s reasonably good for a game edging towards the arcade side of flight sims but there are some inaccuracies dotted in there. For instance if you do a full ninety degree bank turn you would expect to lose velocity, how much depends on how far you pull back, but when I performed such turns in SP my velocity remained constant. I also had a couple of experiences where pitching and rolling simply didn’t work despite the fact that the control surfaces were visibly moving.
As far as I know there aren’t really any differences between the Android/iOS version of the game and the PC version of the game which isn’t great considering the PC price of the game is more than double the price of the mobile version. Even if you ignore the mobile version there still isn’t anywhere near enough content to warrant the price tag.
Installing mods is incredibly easy, you just download the plane you want, open the file and after a few seconds it’ll be available for you to use in-game. You’ll need to save it manually if you wish to use it again. Since the game’s been out on Android and iOS for a while there are loads of planes to choose from.
The chase camera view isn’t fixed and can only be moved using the mouse as the movement of the camera can’t be bound to a controller, something I found rather irritating.
What is in the game is good fun for a few hours, probably even more if you really get into building your own planes.
Only Worth Purchasing When Heavily Discounted.
SimplePlanes, for what it is, is pretty fun but a lack of content and its high price tag make it a game I simply cannot recommend at full price. If you really want to try it out I’d suggest getting it on mobile until it gets a good discount on Steam.
You have the tools you’ll need to bring any airplane to life. Snap parts together to build your airplane’s body. Place engines to add thrust. Design and attach wings and then strap yourself into the cockpit and see how it flies.
Over 100,000 airplanes are available to download for free from SimplePlanes.com Find anything from old WW2 bombers to next generation fighters to sci-fi spacecrafts. You can upload your own airplanes and rise through the ranks from a bronze builder to a gold level builder.
DYNAMIC FLIGHT MODEL
Flight simulation at its finest. Every little change you make in the designer impacts how the airplane flies. Weight distribution, thrust, lift, and drag are all calculated continuously while flying. Parts can break off in spectacular fashion while flying due to over-stress or by hitting something. The fun won’t stop there though. You can keep on flying even with a missing wing if you’ve got the skills.
Climb into the cockpit of one of your custom aircraft and see how it does in the challenges. The challenges will keep you entertained for hours. Land on aircraft carriers, escort bombers, dodge surface-to-air missiles, race through courses, and so much more.
Use all available parts to build airplanes with no restrictions. The sky is the limit. Literally.
Modding is fully supported so you can build your own parts and environments. Download our Unity package which includes specially designed tools to aid in designing and building mods which you can then share with your friends and the community.
