Prey is proof that Bethesda doesn’t have any problem whatsoever with implementing themes and ideas from lesser studios, even while it sues other lesser studios into the ground for using such words as “scrolls” and “prey” in their titles. Such ruthless overlord behavior in the gaming industry makes me not want to ever give them money again, but…
Prey is a decent game.
Not great, just good enough. It does almost nothing really original or ground-breaking, like I said, it wears its influences on its sleeve. It constitutes a mish-mash of at least half a dozen other, much better, iconic games by smaller studios. Other reviews provide a fairly comprehensive list of said games, to which I would add Soma.
The highlight of Prey is the gameplay, offering a myriad of different ways to build your character and tackle obstacles. Stealth is a viable option, as well as the “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” character build options. While not an open-world by most standards, it is not quite a linear one either. It is not huge or expansive (regardless of PC Gamer referring to the game world as “massive” and “maze-like”, both very inaccurate statements that say more about the rag’s relationship with Bethesda and their big ad money than anything else). However, having choices and real options in how to progress is something I look for in games, and Prey delivers. This aspect gives it replayability. There may be some back-tracking, but not an exorbitant amount, not enough to become frustrating. Thorough exploration will prevent most back-tracking. Progression is nothing new, being a series of finding keycards and door codes, with a few variations thrown in the mix to keep it lively.
There is one mechanic from a piece of multi-purpose equipment that is particularly fun. I think that one piece of equipment may be the only original idea in the whole game.
Like the game overall, not bad, not amazing. I thought it could have been darker, grittier. You have a flashlight but never actually need it. The gameworld is brightly lit, mostly clean, new and sterile, except for the few blood decals here and there. Other games create the space horror atmosphere much better. This is space horror for the very young or easily frightened. Unsurprisingly, space horror for the masses. True hardcore fans of the genre will have to get their fix elsewhere. Darker and grittier would have made Prey much more immersive, and would have extended the game time quite a bit. Which brings me to my next point:
At just around 30 hours to finish on normal difficulty, with comprehensive exploration, Prey is far too short for its full AAA pricetag. That puts the average cost at $2.00 per hour, at least twice the usual amount I am willing to pay for even the best of games. Play time may get extended in dlc, further increasing the pricetag, so the value remains the same. My guess is that the other half of this game will be delivered as Prey 2, followed possibly by a blockbuster summer flick from parent company Zenimax.
Prey sets up a compelling, involving story at the very beginning that it never quite adequately delivers. Certainly, there are some twists and turns along the way, but Soma it is not. If you want dark and gritty sci-fi horror with a powerful and moving story, go play Soma right now.
Surprisingly few technical issues at launch for a Beth release. The only problem I had was with audio, specifically the playback logs. They were at a fraction of the volume of everything else. I fiddled with the volume, turning everything else down and cranking my system volume in order to hear the logs, but to no avail. So I ended up missing more than I heard, which was frustrating because a lot of clues and vital information is delivered through these logs.
Lack of an fov slider is a non-issue for me, as the default 85.5 is exactly what I would play at anyway. Much more than that and you get badly warped, distorted perimeters. I don’t know why anyone would want to play like that, even after the announcement that to do so would cause graphical glitches. Still, people like to have options. Motion Blur is something I cannot play with, and so edited the .ini config file to turn it off. Very easy, but still, it should be an option in game.
Prey is just above average for a fps space horror. If that is among your favorite genres, I would recommend it, but only at a 50% or more sale.
